Vietnamese Poetry: A Journey Through History and Culture
Origins and Development
Vietnamese poetry, a long-standing literary tradition, vividly reflects the history, culture, and soul of the nation. From folk songs and proverbs passed down through generations, to the majestic Đường luật poems, the lyrical Nôm poetry, and the diverse and rich modern poetry, it has contributed to the unique identity of Vietnamese literature.
Early period: Vietnamese poetry originated from folk songs, poems, and proverbs reflecting the daily life, family affection, and community. The images of nature, people, and objects were expressed in a simple, realistic, and close-to-life manner.
Medieval period: The influence of Chinese literature led to the emergence of Đường luật poetry, with its strict rules of rhyme and meter. However, Vietnamese poets still expressed their individual selves and souls within this framework. Notable authors of this period include Nguyễn Trãi, with his epic poems.
Modern period: Nôm poetry flourished, deeply reflecting the thoughts and feelings of Vietnamese people. Talented poets like Nguyễn Du, with his masterpiece Truyện Kiều, left an indelible mark on readers’ hearts. This period also saw the emergence of various other genres, such as lục bát and song thất lục bát poetry.
Contemporary period: Vietnamese poetry entered a new phase with its diverse styles and genres. Modern, romantic, pre-war, anti-war trends all left their distinct marks, reflecting the perspectives and ideologies of each era.
